New Bike year

Well, howdy all,

I just wanted to let you all know, that the new bike year has started! I took a short ride yesterday, to "test the waters". In short, its too damn cold to ride yet. Sad to say, but after 50 klicks, it was time to head for the barn. The sun was even out, but the temp was -1 grad, 31 degree F. Two pair of long johns, three shirts, a pull over and then my winter outfit, and it wasnt enough. Then it snowed a bit last night. soooooooooooooooo, it may be a week or so before I hit the bricks again. All my friends in "warmer" places have it lucky. Oh well,

Greetings from western Canada! Not to push the point to far but we woke up to -30C this morning. Last week we were above zero a few days and thought (foolishly) that the worst of winter was over. Thank goodness for heated garages .... we can still work on our bikes while waiting for spring to come.

Yes, I have heard about the weather in Canada before...it's snow and freezing cold for six months...and the other half of the year it's winter time

I'm originally from Minnesota...sort of like Canada.    My Dad always says about winters in Minnesota...they have 9 months of winter and 3 months of poor sledding.

Hmm,

is there anyone forced to live there? May be bears, elks and some sort of these might like that climate - for me that description sounds as an injunction to change the place for driving motorbike or doing something outside the house!
I am sure, that you have nice places to live - may be california or a region in the south might be more comfortable!

You make some very good points. No one is forced to live under these conditions but the very very cold periods are becoming less frequent. I've been here about 25 years and will, in all likelihood retire to the left coast. The big plus with it being cold is that the sun is almost always shining. As for winter activities, if we're not working on our bikes there is skiing and as Kurt has mentioned sledding. You do what you can. Our summers are generally hot and dry.

I can only talk for myself and I like it hot relating temperature! Even it is raining I prefer a worm warm shower when I am on the road with my bike. When I was a child I liked sledding too but things change. If one is interested in winter activities then your region seems to be best.
The only thing I can imagine for me is "skating". I am sure, that I didn't forget how to do that, but too late for that year, seems that spring is knocking on the door and it seems I've heard some wheels scratching on the ground out of my garage.

Even it is raining I prefer a worm shower when I am on the road with my bike.

Down here it's been raining cats and dogs quite often, but I've never heard of worms pouring down. Must lead to slippery roads, I guess. Drive carefully in such conditions!!!

Hi BenW,

I can tell you, that "warm pouring down" really exists! Not only in the south of France, Spain and Portugal, no, also in Indonesia rain normally is on a temperature level which can be named as "quite comfortable"  .
Indeed you are correct when you say, that in "good old Germany" things may be different - but times will change - as we will see in the next 100 years! So keep an open eye also!

Morning!

Taz, you only live about 120 klicks max from me. But lower in elavation, so I am sure its still cold enough there to freeze the brass balls off a monkey. But NOTHING like Canada or Minnesota. I lived in Utah a while. Outside of Ogden, a meter snow was nothing there, but in Canada and Minn, snow never melts, it just blows to the south!

I just could not stand it anymore. I HAD TO RIDE!!! At first I was ONLY going to clean the garage. My garage is NOT heated. So I rolled the bike out to get more room to move. Then I thought I might as well put the battery in, as it was in the way also. When the battery was in, I thought I might as well see if Trudy would speak to me. So I fired her up. My old girl started right up!! Not normal. So then I thought, well, lets tank up. The old girl needs some freash gas. After tanking up, then I thought I would warm her up, and change the oil. So off I went for a short ride. OnAfter two klicks of a ride, I never looked back! Lord was itcold, but what a wonderful day for a ride! Needless to say, the garage is still dirty. Oh well, maybe in the morning!

Yesterday we were up by Coberg. still lots of snow on the road sides. Will it never end? Take care and everyone keep the shiney side up!

Hello Guy,

don't care about that. Respecting to the statistics the february is the coldest month here in Germoney, so wait some weeks and things may change (really, things WILL change, like every year in the last 5.000 years).

And when the sun is shining and it seems that everything is the best to have a ride with the bike, don't be angry about the "shower", thats okay and everyone who starts "biking" early will adepted by that!

Just to warm all your hearts I thought I would send you an image of the South Saskatchewan river today. It's a shot from our living room window. As you can see its pretty much frozen right across. To left and in the distance you can see some open water, but not much. Minus 31 C again this morning but warming up to -9 C tomorrow.  I figure I can walk around with my jacket open at that temperature.
