I will be pulling the gearbox output flange from my R26 this winter and I need an idea of how to make a suitable puller that can do the job without damaging anything.
The Matra 422A is way out of my price range but I can cut, drill, tap and weld to build something suitable. No lathe.
Any suggestions or examples will be appreciated.

Hello,
you will find some good and affordable solution here in the forum, search for this:

Any two arm puller will do, if you keep three things in mind.

- The puller needs to grab the plate perfectly in line with the pins
- you will have to put on something that will keep the pins exactly at the current distance (so this support can take the inward pressure created by the puller)...the plate by far isn't strong enough to stand up to that force. I used a mulitlayer birchwood plate with three holes (as thick as the pins are long) for that purpose, worked like a charm, but steel is ok as well  ;D
- put a cover (like an old socket of appropriate size) over the centre pin within the disk so it won't get destroyed by the puller's centre screw.

Hi Brett
One big disadvantage of this wooden Solution: You can't apply extensive heat !
And as these flanges sit dead certain in almost every case, you'll highly likely need loads of heat while the puller is on. Longer periods ....
Sure it's worth a try. Good luck in any case.

No problem,
just first heat the flange (if necessary at all) and then attach the tool(s)

Forget about heating up the flange for a "better pulling". That doesn´t work. Heat will flow immediately from the flange into the the shaft.

Thank you all for the good information.
Without your advice I would have tried a 2 jaw puller without the extra support and probably would have damaged the flange.
I read the thread from klawo and his frustration in removing the flange on his R25/3.
It is a good example of this group working together to find a solution.
Soon I will start on making my special tool.
Thanks again for all the advice,
Brett
