Hello Antonio.

There's more than one lever visible on that pic of yours...which makes the answer a wee bit difficult.

So either you might want to be a bit more specific or (that's what I personally would suggest) you follow the cable or any other device connected to the lever you want learn more about to whereever its leading and then figure it out...

Light and ignition are the two first things that come to my mind...

Tas, i think He means the middle Lever. Whats the english word for "manuelle Zündzeitpunktverstellung"?i guess the R23 has no Fliehkraftregler.

Hi Toni,
the left lever is usually not the brake, but the clutch.
The small lever can be the manually adjustment for the ignition advance.
There will be a start-position, may be non forced position
and a run-position, therefor you have to turn this lever.
Please follow the cables and make some pics, to have an imagination of the function.
Yours sincere, mek  :schrauber:

:

Mostly vice versa...because the running engine tries to turn the lever in the non forced position...2. the run position (advanced ignition) is the "normal" position...mostly used

Yes, I mean the small lever, there is a cable that goes to the bosch ignition at the front of the motor. This lever is.., I do not know how to explain it somehow "elastic" I pull it and the it goes back to his original position.

When I bought the bike the owner told me to use this when I wanted to start the bike but I do not know how to use it..

Normally the lever don't go back without your help ;D

If you will start the engine ...the ignition has to be on "late (Spätzündung)"....if it is running it has to go to "Frühzündung"...nearly at half of maximum revs the ignition should be full advanced....your before war cycle has no automatic advance ignition system...so you have to do it by hand

Start: pull the lever
after starting (idle)....half way advance (lever half way back)....higher revs : full advance

For the lever has a screw, turn it to get the lever more fixed at the position (mein Gott, mein pidgin englisch!)

Clear...nearly....little??
if not: ask again ;D

No Rolf, not clear at all..... ja ja :galgen: :galgen:

Ok, the bike has the kick stater, first step, I pull this lever to me, then I let it go to its original postion and then I use the kick starter to run the engine

Once the engine starts I do not have to use it any more???

Thanks

Arth

P.D. I found the e mail from the old owner, here is what it says

"near your left hand there is a regulator (a kind of switch) to regalate the ignition-time.
If one turns the switch clockwise, the ignition is earlier ("früh"), if one turns it counterclockwise, it`s later ("spät").
The words "früh" and "spät" are at the left side of the switch, but difficult to read, one must look very closely.
To start the engine, the switch must be in position "spät", otherwise it would not start. The faster the engine runs, the more it must be turned to "früh"."

Better I can't explain this (as the former owner)....do you know why the engine needs "früh" and / or "spät"?

For your 1. question why, for heavens sake, you pull the lever and then let him go to his original position??

Pull the lever to "Spät"....held them at this postion....start the engine....after (!!!) starting....at idle, turn the lever a little bit towards "früh" (his "original position")....at more rev....turn it closer to his "original postion.

You can heart if the engine runs good with this lever postion....turn hinm a little bit to früh and to spät....you can feel (vibrations) and hear the dirferrence...try it

For your 1. question why, for heavens sake, you pull the lever and then let him go to his original position??

Because I am very newbie on this... I pull it and then it went back to his original position automatically... I did not know what to do..  :kopfhau: :kopfhau:

So I think it is clear I pull it, I held it start the bike and slowly let it go to his original postion...

Yestarday I started the bike, I really did not know how I dit it.... :

Next weekend as soon as I have some freetime I will have a round with the bike and I will post here some videos of it.

Rolf,
Your english is quite good. So dont worry about it. You write better english then I will EVER write German!

Arth,

Yes, when you want to start the bike, pull the switch handle toward you(SPÄTE). Hold it there. Kick the bike over. When the bike starts to run, let the switch handle go back toward the right (FRÜH), slowly. You may have to hold the switch handel half way to get the bike to run smoothly, (warmed up). When the bike runs smooooooooooth and the switch handle is all the way towards the right side, you can drive off into the sunset! As far as I know, and according to the handbook, the switch SHOULD NOT return by itself. So maybe you need to see how much tension is on the adjusting screw or nut, on the cable. Take a look at the operators manual in "BAUREIHE" in the forum here. If you dont understand it, let me know, and I will tranlate it into English for you. Not the whole book mind you, but about the ignition advance switch.

Tanks guyfang to your post and of course to all who are helping me.

Since I bought the bike the switch is working this way, it goes to its original position like the cluth, I will see how I can manage with it.

I bought the bike 7 years ago, I bought it in ebay to a german doctor, very nice person, he found the way to send it to me, I received it and I brought it to the BMW dealer in Cordoba and stayed there for almost 1 year as I had some troubles with the documents, as they lost them is Spain I have to move the bike form one city to another until I could homologate it and have spanish numbers (Spain is different.... :kopfhau:.).

I had it at home as an antique furniture for 5 years, It had some leackage of the gear box and finally I decided to move it last saturday, I changed all oils, put some gas and after 6 years being sleep it turned of, lot od whaite smoke at the begining as the cilinder had some oil I had previously included inside to avoid some damage fo so long period...

Now I am waiting to the legal insurance and hope to use it regularly
