Some one make me smart here, on polishing Aluminum. What do I need to polish aluminum? Do I need to coat it when I am done? Is it worth the time and effort? I know I can send it to a pro, but that could cost me out the ass. I need to polish just a few parts, not many, and thought I might try my hand at it. But need more info. So, as my grand pa would have said, "Shoot Luke, the geese is full of air"!

Am besten geht wenn du es "schwabbelst" (du hattest doch geschrieben du verstehst deutsch? wenn nicht, kurze Meldung dann poliere ich mein Pidgin-english wieder auf ;D)....das sit ein rotierende Leinenscheibe (also aus mehreren Stofflagen übereinander zusammen genäht) und Schwabbelwachs...das ist Wachs mit Schleifkörpern darin....Scheibe in Bohrmaschine (notfalls ::)) ....drehen lassen....Wachs gegen drücken ...durch die Reibung schmilzt das Wachs und geht an die Scheibe....so, nun mit der Scheibe das Alu polieren...VORSICHT, hakt gerne und das Teil fliegt durch die Gegend.
Es gibt das Wachs in verschiedenen Körnungen...sehr grob bis fein (=glänzendes Alu).
Schwabbeln hat den Vorteil das das Alu schön glatt wird, fast aussieht wie Chrom und resistenter gegen Korrosion ist....das Wachs schützt das Alu auch....irgendwelche Lacke etc. nimmt man nicht hinterher....ist das erstmal Grund drin (= schön glatt geschwabbelt) kann man das nachher immer ganz einfach mit Handlappen und Alupolierpaste (oder besser: Nevr dull) auf hochglanz bringen...sit danach eine Sachen von Minuten.
Schwabbeln würde ich nur glatte Alusachen wie Handhebel etc....NIE (Tchulligung, Thomas) Gehäuse etc (Gußstruktur)

Yes I read and speak German, writing is "mist". I will start looking for the things I need. A polishing brusch and paste.
I polished things in the 8-9th school class, and remember that the things we polished, often flew through the air! I will be carful, and maybe put some wood behind the polishing machine.

I hate crome. If you need sun glasses to look at a bike, its got too much. Alu, steel, paint, thats fine. But crome and stainless, naja. I will start with some small alu parts today if I can get my house work out of the way.

Thomas recommended Alu-Magic some time ago...it can be purchased in the bay...this stuff is amazing, I have usewd it several times now for fork cover screws and rims and the results are convincing.

Hello again. Another site I've used (to print out tables etc. on compounds and wheels) is the following:

Go to the 'WHICH WHEEL & COMPOUND?' section, about half way down the page. It gives you a table and listing of the various colour coded compounds. I usually stick to red and beyond unless there is a deep gouge. Also, I use a different wheel for each compound (advice given to me by a friend). Generally I just try to get the piece back to what it looked like leaving the factory, but you could go crazy and create a mirror (not my cup of tea though).

I borrowed some wheels and paste last night and polished untill 01:45! Man the alu looks like a million dollars now! I am indeed going to buy my own wheels and paste as soon as possable. My wife made fun of me untill she saw how good the alu looks. Now to start on other thinks like finding a few parts that are missing. If I get done by summer, I will be riding to Gieselwind on the old girl! Again thanks guys!

Hallo Karl,
was ist an Alu Magic anders als oder besser als Autosol oder Never Dull? Funktioniert das auch als Polierpaste wie Autosol, oder ist das nur ein Schutz, wenns schon poliert ist?
Bin nämlich auch gerade am Polieren diverser Teile (nicht BMW) und der Alutank¨wird nach einiger Zeit immer wieder schön stumpf. Da wäre eine Versiegelung gerade richtig, und Klarlack kommt da nicht drauf!

Ich bin nicht der Karl, aber mit Alu-Magic habe ich auch schon Erfahrungen gesammelt...das Zeug ist chemische Politur und Versiegelung in einem...die Oberflächen werden hochglänzend und bleiben es auch deutlich länger als im ungeschützten Zustand.

im Gegensatz zu Autosol entfernt es die (stumpfen) Oxydschichten nicht durch Schleifkörper (zumindest nicht auschließlich) sondern chemisch...Vorteil bei Nevr dull ist das es keine weissen Rückstande in den Vertiefungen hinterlässt.

Ich fürchte so langsam sollten wir die Jans auch durchnummerieren, so wie die Rolfs :-)
Also Jan (Spanien) kauft immer auf seinen Deutschlandbesuchen ein und nimmts dann im Flieger mit. Hier ist so ein bischen 3. Welt bezüglich vernünftiger Ausrüstung. Ansonsten hilft das Internet beim Einkauf ungemein. Ihr düft aber auch gerne was mitbringen, wenn sich mal jemand hierher verirrt- und einen See gibts hier auch ;)
