Guten abend
Was halten Sie davon ?
Jean-Claude
@Jollyjester Hello Robert. That's your area of expertise, isn't it? What would the latest update on BMW's position towards the dated letters be?
All the best, Ute
Bonsoir Jean-Claude,
All systems 'Go'
I can ask a 'Q' on a particular Model, 1923 -79'80, and sometimes receive an answer later that Day, Build / Delivery.
However it is very patchy. USA nothing is known from there
Because; BMW went to computerisation in the 70's ?? recording when a particular machine was built the date it was delivered to where ever !!!. But they soon found, 'Every Letter in Every Word' cost One Pfennig to store on computer. Which very soon mounted up into a lot of D. Marks.
So, to save money, they put the 'Onus' to record the information onto the Dealer who sold the machine, 'Sehr Gut'
Aber;
Until the Dealer ceased trading, as in Butler & Smith, in New York. They were the BMW rep and importers.
There was NO Mr Smith or Butler, it was the trade name, because the Business was on the corner / junction of Smith St and Butler St, in N.Y. City. Close to the Docks.
When eventually. S & B, ceased trading , the records went in the 'Skip'.As We Understand ?? So, in the USA , there are no records of when any BMW , VIN
Numbers/ Dates, at all in the USA
BMW Pre War. I have the records of all the BMW's sold 1935 -39 in England. Some 223, Model, Vin Numbers, Reg Number , Owner Name and Address, and Service work.
Post War, on about 80 ish, all 2nd Hand Used, traded in. No records of New BMW for 1950 - 63. I purchased the Very Last BMW, ( R50s ) AFN Ltd. sold in March 1963, they told me so. Their records were dumped. No one could 'foresee' that in 2023 these would be 'gold dust'.
Date Letters. BMW 'Do Not' issue these any more. Even at Euro 50.00 they are deemed, 'Un Economic'.
However, BMW Archive, will give Ken Buchanan, or myself, the full details of any Machine, which we can quote to the, in our case DVLA.
I presume, they will give the same info to a Private enquiry. I can only speak for the position here in the UK.
If say you wrote to the DVLA to register any BMW, and said." I was
told it was built on the ??? etc. The DVLA will refuse to accept it,
could be truthful, or not
But, If Ken Buchanan or I wrote a quote the Info, , the DVLA will accept it.
Point Blanc, as The Truth, because We have been in the semi official
positions we hold, for in my case 11 years, and have Never had My /
Our word, doubted, or refused. Or 'bent' the truth to suit The Owner
Mr Buchanan and Myself , are listed by H.M.Govt Driving vehicle Licensing Authority ( DVLA at Swansea, are the Department that oversees the Lawful use and registration of ALL vehicles in the UK. From an Electric M.C to a HGV< Steam Road Vehicle, Everything in fact .
I am 11 years into this, 1923 - 79-80; and Mr Buchanan, 1980 - last week, five years
Good morning Robert.
Thanks for your quick reply and the solid information :blumen:
Kind regards, Ute
Hallo Zusammen
