Hello all single cylinder wizards,

Since last summer I am working on a R27 from 1964 and downloaded from your interesting site a lot of usefull information. From other discussions I know that the idle is to low when the engine is could and to high when warm. My problem is that the idle is irregular by warm engine on a hot summer day.
The ignition is OK, the carburator 1/26/93 seems to be new (35 idle jet and 105 main jet gives best result) My idea was that something was wrong with the cooling so I took off the cylinderhead and noticed that the exhaust valve was blocked in his guide. Not much oil was seen around the valves!
Is there a simple check to see if oil comes in the cylinderhead?
Or is there an other problem?

I can understand German so please feel free to answer in German.

Many thanks,
Jom

Hi Jom,

(welding rod) beheben...

Hi Jom,
cleaning out oilchannels in cilinderheads has been described elswhere
I am sure we have an article on this on our dutch site.
How is your dutch  :P ? if good enough follow this link
http://www.bmw-mono-club.nl/Olieperikelen_r26_kop.htm

Is there anyone who knows if this has been described here also?
Do we need to start something new for this?
I still have pictures somewhere on how I did it.

Hi Jom,

Hi, thank you all for your answers and suggestions
I have made the 8mm rod according to the specifications on the Dutch site (thanks Ser for the link)
and used the electrical screw driver (250-300 rev/min) to drive the oil pump. After a second a flush of oil came out the oil pipe in the cylinderhead and at that rate it only takes 30 sec. to empty the sump! So the oil pump is OK...
I'll have to check the cylinderhead now and do the test again.

Sorry to ask this basic questions but all this is new to me, and I have no idea where to ask my questions..... here I go again.

My R27 is from 1964 but the workshop manul is dated 1962 and not all information is up to date.
The carburator is 1/26/93 and I can't find any info about this type. Why did they changed the model four times? Problems ??? Does anyone knows where to buy a manual '64 or later?

Jom

Hi again,
The system did not accept the end of my email with foto of the tool ( 300KB)
Sorry about that,

Markus!

@ Ser:
Thanks a lot for the file  :D
I am sorry you couldn't upload the file, but I had to limit the uploadfilesize because (as Anselm already said) there are still some "modemsurfers" on the road (and we forget how much 100kb are!) and in other hand I don't want the people to fill up my webspace too soon. The upload-folder for the forum was set with 20 Mbyte and at the moment it is already breaking its limits. I will have to extend the folder ...

viele Grüße,
Karl

                       Schwimmer       HD
1/26/46                11gr            120
1/26/52                11gr            120
1/26/55                   7gr           120

R27
1/26/68                   7gr            120
      /79                   11gr         120
      /83                   11gr         115 (ab hier Papierfilter!)
      /93                    11gr        125 (Beschleunigungspumpe, d.h. Nadeldüse heisst hier 1408/6)

Karl, no problemo
separate uploading worked fine also.

Yes I do realize that there are people still using regular phones for Internet connections
I am in the very lucky position that my wife likes Internet a lot, so I must have a very broad-band connection and fast computers to avoid internal problems  8)  poor me  :P

(also I need it for my work but that's secondary  :-X)

Hi,
This is a lot of interesting information, thanks.
My carburator is with 1408/6 and paper air filter. What system gives now the best idle /93 or /83?
In order to clean the oil channels I shall strip the cylinderhead as described above. I ordered some gaskets (Stemler) and the cyl.head gasket (holes) does not fit properly- is there an other address?

Best regards,
Jom

Hi Jom,

Schau mal hier: http://www.bmw-einzylinder.de/forum/index.php?topic=1181.0
Die Diskussion hatten wir schon mal...  ;)

Hallo Jom,
das macht keinen Unterschied bzgl des Leerlaufes.
1408/6, das heisst du hast die Beschleunigungspumpe drin?
dann nimm mal als Standardbestückung alles vom 1/26/93 (HD 125 etc)
Gruß
Rolf

Jom

Hi Rolf,
Yes, the carb. is with 1408/6 and Besch.....pumpe.
Originally it was equipped with HD 135 but that was not good, so I took a LD 35 and drilled it up
to 100 and then enlarged it with a small broache (Reibahle), as somewhere described on the forum.
A small drill of 1,1mm goes just not trough the hole so that is why I said 105.
As soon as the cylinder head is OK I'll make some tests with the different jets and start with 125.

My first idea was that the today's petrol is not the same as in the sixties and that therefore the mixture must be adapted. I wonder if we still are able to 'read' the colour of the sparkplug as before?
Regards,
Jom

rolf

Hallo Jom,
Rolf

Jom

Hi Rolf

I measured the original HD 135 and that hole was about 1,35mm diameter so for me it is logic that
100= 1mm etc. Same for LD 30 that hole is 0,3mm you can check that (comes from Holland).
All the rest of the carburator is checked and OK according the data.
I live in Belgium and if you ask for parts and carb.parts in particular they think you come from the moon.
I'll try now at Tillmanns.

Jom

Jom,
have you tried
de Hobbyist in Hunsle/Grathem (NL Limburg) http://www.hobbyist.nl/
or
de Knalpot in Rilland (NL Zeeland) http://www.knalpot.nl/
or
Jules (NL Den Haag) no web-page

also there is supposed to be a big BMW dealer in Bombay (Wallony close to Visé B) never been there myself; my technical french is almost as good as my german writing  ;D

Ser

Jom

Ser,
I already contacted Tillmann and Stemler and I was lucky at Stemler they have the range 115-125 so I ordered them.
I know the man in Visé he's OK but can not deliver all parts and apart from gaskets no new carb.parts at all ( he works together with the Hobbyist).

Jom

Hi Rolf,
I measure the holes with a calibrated "thing" that is used by clockmakers. It is difficult to describe but
it is a series of small calibated sticks that you puch into the hole, the one that fits is the diameter.

Hi Jorn,
nope HD 125 does NOT mean 1,25 mm diameter or simular  - as described above, at Bing, at Hertweck´sBook etc. Sorry for that.

In fact accordings this, this figure"125"  is a "flowrate-equivalent" (however defined) maybe for some historical reason.

Drilling and / or broading without flowrate measuring for calibration reasons could be well  far away from being accurate enough - but having enough of time and tries it could still give good results.

In my optionion there are at least two other important criterions for the "quality of an nozzle" (truely not a trivial problem, a whole branch of industry makes good money there) :
Flow (resistance == shape of the inlet conus etc.)
and
dispersion of gas particles (=droplet size).

For finetuning a carb one could well start wil the max speed criterion - this means full throddle driving and optimizing to max speed by usage of different main nozzles ( HD= eg.  120/125/130) and so on. So you need a handful of new nozzels anyway....

Hello Ingo,

Interesting informations, tell me more about the book everybody's talking about but that I do not know. Is it still available and where?

Hi Jorn,

its not  a BMW specific but a general book about mechanicals of motocyles, written in mid of 50s - so for oldtimers. Hertweck has deceased quite a time ago, new books for him are not to be expected. The books is somewhat unsorted so sometimes quite difficult to follow. But a lot of very interesting infos and pics neverthanless included.

German reprint available, sorry for that, look eg. here:

http://www.nsu-greifzu.de/html/nsu_aktuell.html

"....
