Beitrag von: Taz am 18 September 2019, 20:20:07
Hallo zusammen.

Hello.

Brexit...honestly, I couldn't care less....I am going to visit the Western Isles in 2020. Travel date somewhere in June or July, total travelling time roughly one fortnight, local accomodation renting a cottage as proven way.

Daily driving distances there and back will be kept under 230 miles, with an average speed somewhere between 30 and 40 mph this should be pretty feasible.

All seriously interested members are invited to participate in the discussion.

Booking and reservation information (IMPORTANT):
Accommodation on the Isle of Harris and Lewis has been booked for all  3.7. to 8.7.
The ferry Uig-Tarbert and back cannot be booked for multiple vehicles, please do so on your own (precise times see below)...multiple passengers for one vehicle are no problem, though.
As we will travel in smaller groups towards the Isle of Skye and back again it is each travel group's (respectively each member's) responsibility to make arrangements for accommodation and possible additional ferry rides along the way.

All the best, Taz

PS: More detailed information and a list of participants at the end of this post

Re. deadlines: all participants from continental Europe should declare themselves by Christmas...the later we have to book the ferries the more expensive these will be.

Ute,

I am so sorry I have not been in contact in the last year.
However, I do hope things will improve and I am determined to be more active and make use of my two little Einzylinder.  Please can you give me the dates for the Western Isles Tour and also a rough itinerary?  I would love to participate.  I have also told Rainer and Bina that I will try to attend the Edersee meeting.
I am glad to see that you will be organising this Scotland trip, it has become a tradition, hasn't it.
Let me hear how you are doing.
Best wishes,  Tien.

Friends/Fellow 250cc single cylinder enthusiasts

Great idea Ute  :applaus:!

Christine and I visited the Western Isles this time last year in a hired camper van, a VW California Ocean, with two dachshunds. This was something we had wanted to try for a few years, that is visit the Western Isles in a camper. There was a problem with the campers rising roof which meant we couldn't use it but also the winds at times were such that had we raised the roof we would have lost it and I would have lost the deposit on the van. We had a fantastic time, the scenery is spectacularly beautiful with excellent well surfaced roads - idea for two wheels.

We got the ferry from Oban to Castlebay on Barra traveling North through the 160 mile long archipelago to Stornaway and back on the ferry again to Ullapool. The crossing to Barra was interesting taking eight rather than the normal six hours as the weather was a bit rough. I thanked the deck crew as we disembarked asking how bad does it need to be before the sailing is cancelled. The response was that the sailor had bigger waves in his bath and that I shouldn't be such a lowland wimp. I should have suspected something as when we parked on deck the crew were tying down an articulated lorry! Any profit CalMac made from ticket sales must have been eroded by the cost of smashed crockery.

Barra is beautiful but tiny and would not be my recommendation for a prolonged stay. Benbecula is a flat as a pancake and pretty featureless. For a fixed base of a week or so Harris (beautiful beaches) and Lewis would likely be a good choice as it is the largest landmass.

I am apprehensive about using my slow R25/3 to get to Skye. How about the Welsh contingent hiring a van big enough to carry three bikes and riders to Mallaig or thereabouts and riding from there to the ferry, sharing the hire and fuel costs?

With the weather gods on your side it has the potential to be a fantastic trip and I am up for it  :bike:.

Best wishes to all
:respekt:
Norrie

Uff...thanks for your patience.

Despite the news from Bill (which came quite as a shock) it seems that most of the Skye/Wales gang is back together :juhuu:.

Thanks to Norrie for his input, it is simply invaluable to have somebody with such fresh memories and experience to share.

As for the date and itinerary....that is something we can discuss here...for the sake of my mother's nerves (and my dogs) I should avoid being away from home for more than a fortnight....I'd prefer travelling in June or July as I do have colleagues with schoolkids at home (and those are bound to the summer holidays in August, which in turn will be the time when I have to man the castle, so to speak).

Coming to the Amsterdam ferry port of IJmuiden will take me a whole day from I am living, and although we have seen proof that the distance from there to Portree and beyond can actually be covered in one day I'd rather take my time and plan for a two-day-trip across the highlands...allowing us to pick up Norrie on the way and pay a visit to a water hole in the highlands I have grown very fond of over the years.  So six or (if we stick to the "arrive at the ferry the day before departure" scheme) seven days are already covered, which leaves roughly one week for the Western Isles. If Karl is going to come with us we might have a chance to ease the burden a little bit as he can't come by bike anyway....meaning car meaning trunk... ;D

Having said that I'd like to have a good idea of the start and ending date be mid October if possible so I can arrange for my days off...

So...first thing...who else has restrictions re the travel dates, being it due to personal or job circumstances?

All the best, Ute

That seems fine from my side Ute as I am not tied by dates as long as I have plenty of notice.

There may be a few more who own einzylinder bikes who I will ask if they are interested, if that is ok. Perhaps Robert Freeman might be one. I did ask Ashley Boal but he is looking to sell his R25 and by an ST.

Best regards, Ute

Hello Ute
Traveling North from Edinburgh together would be good. I am finding that I much prefer slower more scenic roads to travel on my R25/3 than busy 'A' roads.
I am still running the engine in possibly having done 600miles since fitting the newly rebored barrel/piston. Sustained higher speeds results in an oil weep out the timing hole cover - likely from the rear crankshaft seal, but all my vehicles are rolling projects
Can I suggest that June would be the prefered month to visit the Western Isles as a lot of UK residents holiday during July and August. Also May/June can quite often be better weather wise that far North.
Best wishes
Norrie

My girlfriend works at the school so we only can go on vacation in the school holidays. Next year they start at the 27th of June. Maybe we can talk about a later departure ? Around the 28.06?

Well, would work for me...as a matter of fact any dates that allow me to be back by end of July would be fine for me....being tied to summer break (Bavarian, that is) in a reverse way as some colleagues with school kids rely on me being back in the store while they are enjoying some days away from work with their families...

What about the other participants?

Hi Tim.

On second thought...not all of us are blessed with such a generous summer break as your girlfriend...depending on whether Rudi will be part of it or not ... would it be possible to say meet at Rudi's place on the 27th or at the ferry on the 28th? generally starting on the 28th means for me wasting a precious day I could spend on British soil instead later on...

Sorry, have been to "Über Grenzen" twice and them tyres are reaaaally itchy again....

Hi Rudi.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A few thoughts on getting there and coming back:

Norrie had suggested to maybe hire a van, so at least some of the UK-based participants would be spared the long overland distances by motorcycle...this also might be an option for us from the continent...I already had both ...the 2016 Wales trip saw us coming over by car and trailer which allowed for longer day distances, but Scotland and my four-corners-of-the-realm trip did prove that this kind of travelling is also possible with our single cylinders and can be fun, too ... please discuss...

Moin Ute,
das Grobe habe ich schon mitbekommen. 😉
Auch die Reisetermine sind mir bekannt.
I am a Part of the Tour.  😊

Das was Norri vorschlug wäre voll OK.

Ich freu mich 😊

Hello to all,

Travelling to Kendal from Newcastle then on to see Norrie would be a trip of about 380 km at least.

If you are stopping near Norrie's, I would be happy to travel by car and stop at a nearby B & B or hotel and save everyone a lot of extra miles.
Kind regards.

Hello to all.

If there are no more comments re. the travel dates I would like to schedule the Western Isles trip for  28.06.2020-12.07.2020...so all of you have enough lead time for planning your days off.

Best regards, Ute

Hi zusammen.

Hi to all.

It seems that the dates proposed are ok for everybody.

So in case we can stick to well-tested routines the continentals will arrive on British soil on Monday morning, from there we should be able to reach Glasgow or Stirling for a first night on the island..and hopefully meet with Bill as well as being joined by the British participants of the ride.

From there I would suggest riding to Skye (shorter but with a deadline via Mallaigh, longer but more relaxed via the Skye bridge), spending another night either in Mallaigh or somewhere around Portree, the next morning should see us embarking on the ferry to Tarbert, afterwards the fun will continue...

Could you please let me know whether this is feasible from your perspective (or whether you would suggest any changes to improve our travel) and especially Bill, whether Glasgow or Stirling would suit you (if neither does, which city would you suggest for an evening with you)?

So far, all the best, Ute

Hallo Jan.

Hello Brian.

The first one IS looking really nice, the second not so much, being located on the Isle of Skye...that would mean taking the ferry over to Harris and Lewis every time we are going to explore places over there...

But according to Gearrannan's web site we might be able to have 5 of us lodging there tops...all the nice ones (especially the larger one) are sold out already during the time we planned to go there  :traurig: :kopfhau:

Thanks for the feedback.

I have been advised that booking accommodation has to happen early to be sure of getting spaces and especially with the numbers we have.

We may be able to fit in Gearrannan if we spread out through all their accommodation but I haven't looked in detail yet so this may not be true. The site is on the isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides so will involve ferry travel.

I was considering The Isle of Sky because of the bridge which supports easy access to the west coast of Scotland.

I will look on line to see what else is available.

Hello Brian.

First, sorry for any potential misunderstanding...to my knowledge "Western Isles" and " Outer Hebrides" are synonyms, the Isle of Skye (although a beauty of it's own) was supposed to be nothing but a way-station next year.

Spreading over two or more accomodation sites might be the only way, given the large number.... nothing new as we did this back in 2013 as well...

I will provide more precise travel dates to allow for proper planning....I simply didn't know how late we are when it comes to lodging.

Welll.... that lass is talking about independence from England pretty often.... problem is, no matter when Scotland would actually declare its independence  the EU treaty would not allow then to kind of like inherit UK's membership....they would have to go through the usual application process like any other candidate country. Given the relatively small size of Scotland and their rather remote location at least the time until being welcomed back to the madhouse might prove pretty demanding....maybe they should talk with the Icelandic government up front....these guys applied as well and after skme serious consideration decided to better let it be....there must have been a good reason for that change of mind, doesn't it?

Seeing that the EU is looking like being over the top now in every aspect I can barely imagine this whole get out of the UK is something really to be desired at this point of time...

Hallo zusammen.

Hello again.

First...thanks to Rainer for providing all that information about the IJmuiden-Newcastle ferry...it will be most helpful with defining a deadline for final confirmation of participation.

Another topic: we might have an additional participant, Lothar (from another forum), he was riding with us back in 2016 all across Cymru and so at least the British members of our little posse will already know him.

I did some detailling work on the schedule (please see first posting) in order to help with planning the 2020 holidays as well as allow Heiko to identify possible meeting points.

Hallo Tim.

Also...bitte Gedanken machen...

Liebe Grüße, Ute

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I agree with Tim and Norrie, sounds like a great (and large enough) place for all of us...as the price won't change with the number of guests it's now up to the "maybe" candidates on the list...kind of like wager their share of the total sum that they will make it (and loose the money if they won't join us in the end) or declare their withdrawal....finding a place for a smaller number should be easier, but the more the merrier...

All the best, Ute

Tim

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Exactly, it has to be paid in advance.
I attached the prices as a screenshot.
When booking, 570 € must be paid directly, on June 22nd. the balance will be drawn in automatically.

From now on we need firm commitments so we can plan and book properly.

I recently saw how participants jumped off an event and got the money back.
This creates unnecessary stress when the whole group has to pay more than planned and communicated.

All the best,
Tim

Du plädierst also fürs "zuschlagen", hab ich verstanden.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Problem: three of our mainland participants aren't sure whether or not they will actually be able to join us or would have to withdraw for one reason or another...as the accommodation requires a substantial up-front payment to secure the booking all of us should agree on how we distribute that weight and what is supposed to happen financially if somebody joins or leaves after the payment ... according to Tim this cottage seems to provide the best value-for-money from eight participants up (and that seems to be the minimum number of our party) so it might a pity to let that opportunity walk away...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

as far as I can tell the topic accommodation seems to be seen as suffiently discussed by all, and as another unsecure candidate withdrew I'd like to suggest the following.

Currently our party will consist of eight or nine people.

The cottage Tim found seems to be ok for everyone (be it by silent or active approval) so I see no reason to look further.

Payment: everyone who would like to find a bed out there is paying his equal share of the reservation fee (non refundable, whoever wants to withdraw after that can do so, of course, but the money for the fee will be gone for good), the remaining amount will be shared among all participants who really embark on this trip.

Please feel free to discuss promptly, I will assume silence as approval.

All the best, Ute

Moin!

Hello.

Tim and I made a decision...we will (meaning Tim will) book the location for the time from the 3rd to 8th July for a group of ten, because some more delays might mean that we won't be able to find anything at all for this number of people and the time.

Re. the travel there...this leaves us with the freedom to either meet right away as planned on the 29th and travel as a  large group or any can either travel later or a different route, the final meeting point being the ferry terminal at Uig on the Isle of Skye on the 3rd of July.

Re. payment:remains unchanged...everybody on the list pays his/ her fair share of the up front payment, thus "buying" the right to a bed there...wheover will withdraw from then on wont get any money back, but won't have to pay the according share of the final invoice.

All the best, Ute

Hallo zusammen,

29.06. Newcasle nach Callander (ca. 300km)
30.06. Callander bis Borve auf Skye (Sehr schöne Strecke über Glencoe, Fort William, Glenfinnan, ca. 250km)
30.06. - 03.07. auf Skye, wir wollen uns Papageientaucher und den old man of Storr ansehen, dazu etwas über die Insel fahren.

We are currently planning:

30.06. Callander to Borve on Skye (very nice route via Glencoe, Fort William, Glenfinnan, approx. 250km)

03.07. Meeting with the rest in Uig on Skye and crossing to Lewis and Harris, accommodation is available from 4 p.m.

On the way to Skye and Skye itself we will book an Airbnb or local bnb.

Hi.

Just to bring everybody up to speed.

We (to be more precise in this case Tim) have booked a cottage near Stornoway (the one in Tim's post) for the time from the 3rd of July until the 8th....the owner asked for a small upfront payment that Tim would like to be shared among us, the amount due from everyone (1/8 share of the sum) has been communicated by PM and was asked to be paid via PayPal.

As the continental part of the party will still take the Sunday night ferry to Newcastle this left the five of us with a schedule and accomodation gap.

Tim, Dani, Rainer and Dennis will press on straight after disembarking the ferry towards the Isle of Skye to roam the island, I will visit family and then move on to Norrie in order to do a nice cross-highlands-run towards the Isle of Skye.

All eight of us will meet again on the morning of the 3rd of July in Uig on the western shores of the Isle of Skye latest to embark the Uig-Tarbert ferry to Harris and Lewis.

This leaves some options for Tien and Brian...they can either join Norrie and me somewwhere near the east coast of Scotland and ride on with the two of us from there or join the rest of the party in Uig on the 3rd of July. As to where leave a car and trailer I'd suggest maybe having a chat with the Coop's manager in Portree...the parking area outside the shop is huge and the equipment would be under public surveillance for the time...not too bad, is it?

Any further questions? please do not hestiate to contact me...

All the best, Ute

I am afraid this change of schedule will ruin our meeting with Bill at least on the way towards the islands and with all participants, but on our way back we might find an opportunity...I am open to suggestions.

On our way back it seems that we will be still riding together at least to Broadford, from there it will depend on schedules and planned routes...the continental part and Norrie will most probably head east towards Edinburgh and Newcastle, whereas Brian and Tien might find it more conventient to take the Armadale-Mallaigh-ferry as a short-cut down south.

Rainer

Everyone should book the ferry to Tarbert themselves, saw no opportunity to book several vehicles.
A ferry leaves at 2:10 p.m. on Friday only.
I would suggest going back via Lochboisdale-Oban!
This ferry back could be reached directly without another ferry.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ach Crivens...I would like to remind you that our cottage (if I dare use this word for a house for 11) is located in Shulishader near Stornoway on the island of Harris and Lewis, whereas the ferry from Lochboisdale to Oban usually departs from North Uist...which itself is can only be reached from Harris und Lewis with the help of another ferry...

Thus the Tarbert-Uig-ferry, together with the Skye-Bridge,  seems to be the only connection the Scottish mainland that will require only one ferry connection

"Na h-Eileanan an Iar" means all of the Outer Hebrides/ western Isles (to be more precise the UK Parliament constituency)...and as a name for a whole group of islands it isn't the best of choices when it comes to count ferry connections from one place to another

Yes, but we are talking about 43 miles and 62mins...early July, so that high up North the nights aren't properly dark anyway...the light will be a wee bit dimmed around midnight, that's it..

Hallo Tschenso,

Daher meine Bitte, mich bei meiner To do Liste zu unterstützen.

Excellent carton  :applaus:  only the occupant of the sidecar should be wearing a clowns outfit!
I could never understand why you would want to place further obstacles to trade and collaboration on mutually beneficial projects with your nearest neighbours.
In particular with an ever shrinking planet with problems stacking up that will affect us all and our descendants well into the future.
This was not something the majority of Scots voted for.

Looking forward to further two wheeled adventures in 2020 especially the Western Isles trip  :bike:.

To be honest I rather doubt that all European countries would vote in favour of an independent Scotland joining the EU and the Euro-zone.... especially France, Spain and Italy might be acting rather carefully as welcoming an independent Scotland might fuel separatistic tendencies in Corsicans, Basques, Catalans and Southern Tyroleans ... movements that said countries would hardly want to encourage.

Independence from the English....well, aye, but only to join the EUSSR....crivvens....

Dear All

It is with a sad heart that will not be able to make the trip to the Western Isle this year.
My health has not been good of late and even though it is improving, I fear it will not improve enough, in time, to allow me to go.

On top of this we have just sold our house and we are buying a small farm so we will have a busy time ahead.

Feel free to give my place to someone deserving and please use my deposit money as you see fit.

I am optimistic about the future and hope to see you all at some time in the future.

Good luck with your move...and make those barn doors wide, I can see another Welsh adventure down the road ahead of us.

All the best, Ute

PS: for the rest of the gang...some fine music to get youself into the mood:

Hallo zusammen.

So sorry you are unable to join in the fun on this occasion Brian but glad to hear your health is improving.
I hope you will allow yourself time off from filling and emptying packing cases with a move imminent to get out on two wheels at least for some time over the coming summer  :bike:.

What a great band Ute! I had never heard of Peat & Diesel and look forward to listening to more of them with a Western Isles backdrop and a beer in hand  :saufen:.

Good luck with your two wheeled preparations Tschenso, I am doing similar work on my R25/3. Best to get it done now while there is time before the trip. Check the surface on the flywheel that bears on the seal as mine had a sharp edge which I failed to notice in my enthusiasm to get the wheels turning.
:respekt: and best wishes to all.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

According to their website DFDS will suspend all sailings on the route Amsterdam-Newcastle from this weekend onwards, currently until the 13th of April...so at the moment we must admit that the chances for our Hebrides trip are dwindling rapidly....all possible ways are blocked.

So hope is the only thing we have...but on the upside it will provide us with enough time to prepare our bikes....

Stay home and stay safe and healthy

Hello all Einzlinder enthusiasts
I hope you, your families and friends are all able to stay safe from this terrible virus.
My hope is that our normal lives will return in time for us to visit the Western Isles as a group as planned  :bike: and as Taz says with well fettled motorcycles  :schrauber:.
Best wishes to you all from Scotland.
:respekt:
Norrie
