The front mudguard of my R26 has twice started to split at its very bottom, below its mounting to the front swingarm.
Is this a known problem or am I just unlucky?
It's currently being repaired with some reinforcing.

Maybe this is due to the R26's reputation as a notorious Shaker.
Does yours have the crank with the lighter counterweights and a steel conrod ?
Think outside the box !

Just unlucky i would say.

Thanks for the replies. When the first split happened the motor had a shaker crank (I didn't know any better & neither did anybody else in the local BMW community back then, not many singles in Australia). The split was repaired when the bike was put back on the road recently, with the correct crank. But the second split occurred about 1cm away from the first. We'll see.

Hi Bob

On my R26, 2 front wheel mudguards cracked. To stop the cracking, I screwed on a BMW logo.

Hi Chambondu.
Did you drill a hole to stop the split spreading? I quite like the look of the BMW roundels on mudguards.
My R26 hasn't done much work since the latest repair so I don't know whether it's been successful.

Hi Bob,
to prevent bilding any cracks on the fenders you may mount these parts by the use of silentblocks to separate the fenders totally from the frame. There schould be no direkt mecanical connection between fender and frame or fork at no point at all. There are quite a number of dense foam pads availible in black color to realize these modifications really quick and easy. I did so on my own R26 and R25/3 and till today it worked very nicely. Have fun riding your bike, *****

Hi Hans
Thanks for the suggestions & kind wishes.
I've installed rubber pieces at the mounting points at the bottom rear of the mudguard. We'll see how that goes. .
