I am trying to learn about the charging system on my 1956 R26 and I  keep running into the word "lima" in the German language posts.
This does not seem to translate to English.
I believe it means generator or alternator but it sometimes seems to mean something else.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi Brett,
welcome to our BMW-1cyl-community.
There are lots of shortcuts usually, often in use are the first letters in combination.
LiMa means : Lichtmaschine, the electric generator.

MacGyver, Rolf,

Thanks for the fast replies.

That makes sense.

My R26 has had an Hitachi alternator adapted to it.

I want to get it working for now and install an original system in the future.

Carott

Clemens,

There is a 6 volt "made in Japan" ignition coil under the tank.

The advance mechanism and the points appear original.

There is an adapter keyed to the front of the alternator's permanent magnet rotor which is held on by the bolt for the advance mechanism.

The stator is a six coil three phase unit.

The rotor is keyed and fits the taper on the crankshaft.

It was not wired when I bought the bike.

Thanks Brett,
seems exotic.

Hi,

seems to be an interesting solution if it is not visible in running condition.  :o

Hi Brett,
if you get it to work, I'd stick to it. ( assuming this is 12 Volts )
Spare parts for the stock dynamo getting rare and expensive, and despite of this guys over here adapt other 12 V solutions for more output power and
brighter headlamp ( "H4").  Looks like the pre-owner put a decent amount of work and brain-schmalz into it.  :D

Cheers,
Sascha
