Manifesto1984

Hello!

I have a bmw R26. I removed the time to replace with a new one but i forgot tο mark the camshaft sprocket. I have the manual but i don't know what exactly to do to find the correct position.

Could you explain me somebody?

Thank you!

Don't know exactly what your problem is...
You have to put both, crank- and camshaft in "OT" (TDC) position.
Crankshaft ist clear: You can use the flywheel mark (provided its position has been checked).
Camshaft: Don't look at the picture with the ruler (p.69), use the procedure for R27, wich has the same result, but is more accurate:
P.65, fig. 74 just means, the third tooth off from one of the holes has to point to the right upper screw of the bearing flange. You don't need the mark.

Thank you very much my friend.
Definetely i found te correct position!!!

I made a mistake.   ???

I put the time chain like the describing of friend Rütz. The third tooth of one hole has to point to the right upper screw of the bearing flange. OK for this.

I adjust my valves 0.15 for intake and 0.20 for exhaust and i make one turn the engine until to see the OT mark again in the window of flywheel.

I measure the adjustment of valves (and this is the problem), the gap is too big, both of two rockers. If i will turn other one time the flywheel until to see the OT mark to the window, the adjust of valve it's ok.

What goes wrong?

I think in the first time and the second time in the OT mark, the gap of valves must be the same. Is that true?

Turning arount the crankshaft for one time results turning around the camshaft twice! So have a look for the correct OT-position when you fit the valves!

My tip: Install the spark plug, when adjusting the valves.
Then you will "feel", which ist the right OT (= compression-OT).
You adjusted the valve clearance at the wrong OT (= overlap-OT)!
To countercheck the clearance you always have to turn the crankshaft twice.
It is a four stroke engine! ;D

Hi Bernd, its vice versa: 2 Revs Crankshaft = 1 Rev Camshaft.
I suppose you mixed this up by accident  ;D

I make an easy test....at the "wrong OT" both valves are moving if I go a little bit back anf forward with the Crankshaft.....at the "right OT": both valves doesn't move.
Control: if I move the crankshaft (....in the right direction!)
1. after the "wrong OT" the inlet opens immediatly
2. after the right OT the outlet moves, after a little time

As Rütz, sacha and co says: it is a 4 Stroke engine-> only 1 OT for exploding mixture (the right OT)!

I adjust the valves at compresion OT and in the next OT (1 complete turn crankshaft and half turn camshaft) the gap of rockers is too big.

If i will adjust the valves in the other OT (when the piston push the exhausts out). In the next OT (1 complete turn crankshaft and half turn camshaft) the rockers push the valves down (there isn't gap between rockers and valves).

Which of these two methods is the correct?

Maybe i have other problem?

I will try in other words:
There is one Top dead center (OT), where the valves are open/rockers move,
and one other, where both valves are closed/rockers dont' move.
That is the Crank-position where you have to adjust valve clearence.
Does it get clear now ?

Ääääh Manifesto...did you really read ´the answers?
Your (!!!) Compression (in really it is NOT the Compression OT) OT is the wrong (!!!) OT

Ah, the case of the missing OT!!

As mentioned, it needs to be OT on the compression stroke.  I usually watch the valve action as I turn the engine by hand.  Watch for the intake valve to open and then begin to close.  Keep turning slowly...the next OT you see in the window is it!!
