Titel: 1958 R26 cylinder head - Zylinderkopf
Beitrag von: bwprice100 am 23 Oktober 2016, 14:25:43
Hi All

I have hit a problem with the rebuild of my 1958 R26.  :\'(

The cylinder head I have has had the exhaust threaded boss repaired with a pressed in bronze piece but it no longer aligns with the fitment of the exhaust pipe. I think can do a temporary repair to allow me to continue with the rebuild but in order to fix the bike properly I will need a replacement head.

To this end I am looking for a replacement head. I don't mind if the valves and guides need an overhaul as long as the head it's self is serviceable.

Thanks Brian

Hi Brian.
I was offered an R26 head only yesterday by a BMW Club member. If you send me a pm I'll put you in touch with the seller.

Hello Brian.

Whatever you are planning to do with this head don't throw it away... afaik there's at least one company here in Germany that will be able to fix the head properly, i.e. weld on a new thread..if sending the head would be too expensive then wait for the next visitors from the continent and ask them to take it with them.... shouldn't take too long  :)

All the best, Taz

Thanks both.

Bill I have sent you a PM.

Taz, I would be interest in the contact of the company who could do a repair, at least I can find out what it would cost to repair.

Hello Brian,
they did the job on my R26-head:  http://www.heinz-prinz.de/   for 80 €.
They cut off the burred stub, machined it new and welded it to the head. There's a certain risk, that the angle is not 100% perfect.
Which was the case on mine. But I complained and they did it again whithout any troubles. The second go looks much better.
(I gave the hint to stand the head on the inlet port flat, and that the outlet has to be exact perpendicular then)
I just gave a 10 buck tip to the mechanic for the extra work.
I had to grind the inner diameter and flatten the welding bead inside by myself.
I can't tell, if the angle fits exactly now, as I didn't install the head yet. But compared to another untouched head it seems to be OK.
It is just slightly longer, approx. 3 to 5 mm. 2 pictures show the 1st try with the wrong angle.
Best Regards,
Sascha

Thank you Sascha

The information on the geometry is very helpful and allows me to check a few things.

Just an update on this issue and again thanks for the help.

I know know there wasn't a problem with my head but it may still need a repair and to this end I purchased a spare head, here in the UK who is a member of this forum.

I have come to the conclusion that the exhaust pipe is wrong and think it may be for an R27, Item 27 here.

I have know bought a new one but I have a new problem but i have started another thread for that. :)

Thanks Brian
