Hallo  :juhuu:
I have a BMW R26, and want to install a new/rebuilt carburateur.
(The one i have is the original BING, but is malfunctioning)

My R26 has the 1/26/55 (as shown in the photo).

I read that there is a rebuild kit available from bing itself. Where is this available?
Any other sites where i can find a ready-rebuilt one?

Kind regards!

Hello Mr. X from somewhere  ;)

You will hardly find a ready-built "new" Bing 1/26/55. If you get a good used/refurbished one with new wear parts, be ready to pay 250€+

First, you should check what really needs to be replaced. So what is the problem you are facing with your carb?
My recommendation would be to the following:

1) Dismount the carb and do a complete, careful disassembly

2) Put the parts into a soda bath for not longer than an hour (you can use wash soda, or just baking powder/soda, its the same); use warm water; Clear it well with pure water afterwards, and threat all openings and canals with compressed air (blast) to dry it; Do not expose the housing to aggressive cleaners, the zinc diecasting is sensitive! (the other parts like jets don't bother too much)

3) Check the floater for right weight (7gr.) and whether it is still a floater or a "diver"  ;D, which can happen due to hair cracks, which are clearly visible, so fuel gets inside

4) Check the needle valve whether it is still able to seal the float chamber when closed; if not, give it a try to regrind it with toothpaste or Autosol etc. to create a good fit again; if it is worn out, replace

5) Check the needle stock for any wear; same for the jets; the jets are not that expensive and it's definitely worth to renew them, unless you know the engine was running fine before recently

6) Check whether the inset, holding the needle stock from below and showing up in the main throughput of the carb is in its intended position and has not started to move upwards. Best would be to post some pictures here so experts can judge

7) Replace all seals (seal set availabe on ebay etc..)

There are three major dealers in Germany available where most of the spare/wear parts are still on stock. Either Motorrad Stemler in Western Germany, Ulis Motorradladen in Frankfurt area, or Rabenbauer in Southeast Germany. BING spare parts are also available from many other oldtimer suppliers... google helps.

To get an understanding which parts you are looking for, Faak Tillmanns shares a perfect overview of all kind of Bing carbs. Also he is specialised on BINGs, as Borgward pointed out already.

Steffen,

Just getting to this post now and I am very interested what you mean by #6.  I was not able to decided what would be moving up and how to check.  Can you give me a bit more information?

Thank you!!!

Hi James,

it's all about the "Mischkammereinsatz" ("mixing chamber inset", holds the main jet stock/nozzle fitting), which you can see in the picture of the following thread at 9 o'clock looking through the carb opening:

https://bmw-einzylinder.de/forum/index.php?topic=909.msg5748#msg5748

In this picture, it has moved a lot. You can see the rippling, which should prevent the "Mischkammereinsatz" from moving. A few answers further down, you can see how it should look like (ripple just not visible).
If you post a similar picture of your carb, we can judge. It is not a totally common phenomenon, but it happens on some carbs, and then leads to weird effects you never manage to chase down not knowing this issue, so better sort it out at the very beginning.

best regards,

Steffen

Ahhhh, thank you both!

I do remember seeing this on duane's site and my carbs do not have that issue.  I have checked them against each other and the pictures.  If I have time I will send pictures of my spare.

I have a 1/26/83 that is mounted to the motorcycle and a spare 1/26/93 that I cleaned and got setup in case the 1/26/83 was not good but now it is a spare.

I have another question I will post in another thread right away as not to hijack this thread.

Thank you!!!!

James
