Hello.

Brexit...honestly, I couldn't care less....I am going to visit the Western Isles in 2020. Travel date somewhere in June or July, total travelling time roughly one fortnight, local accomodation renting a cottage as proven way.

Daily driving distances there and back will be kept under 230 miles, with an average speed somewhere between 30 and 40 mph this should be pretty feasible.

All seriously interested members are invited to participate in the discussion.

Booking and reservation information (IMPORTANT):
Accommodation on the Isle of Harris and Lewis has been booked for all  3.7. to 8.7.
The ferry Uig-Tarbert and back cannot be booked for multiple vehicles, please do so on your own (precise times see below)...multiple passengers for one vehicle are no problem, though.
As we will travel in smaller groups towards the Isle of Skye and back again it is each travel group's (respectively each member's) responsibility to make arrangements for accommodation and possible additional ferry rides along the way.

All the best, Taz

Hi Steffen.

Re. deadlines: all participants from continental Europe should declare themselves by Christmas...the later we have to book the ferries the more expensive these will be.

Born Again

Ute,

I am so sorry I have not been in contact in the last year.
However, I do hope things will improve and I am determined to be more active and make use of my two little Einzylinder.  Please can you give me the dates for the Western Isles Tour and also a rough itinerary?  I would love to participate.  I have also told Rainer and Bina that I will try to attend the Edersee meeting.
I am glad to see that you will be organising this Scotland trip, it has become a tradition, hasn't it.
Let me hear how you are doing.
Best wishes,  Tien.

Great idea Ute  :applaus:!

Christine and I visited the Western Isles this time last year in a hired camper van, a VW California Ocean, with two dachshunds. This was something we had wanted to try for a few years, that is visit the Western Isles in a camper. There was a problem with the campers rising roof which meant we couldn't use it but also the winds at times were such that had we raised the roof we would have lost it and I would have lost the deposit on the van. We had a fantastic time, the scenery is spectacularly beautiful with excellent well surfaced roads - idea for two wheels.

We got the ferry from Oban to Castlebay on Barra traveling North through the 160 mile long archipelago to Stornaway and back on the ferry again to Ullapool. The crossing to Barra was interesting taking eight rather than the normal six hours as the weather was a bit rough. I thanked the deck crew as we disembarked asking how bad does it need to be before the sailing is cancelled. The response was that the sailor had bigger waves in his bath and that I shouldn't be such a lowland wimp. I should have suspected something as when we parked on deck the crew were tying down an articulated lorry! Any profit CalMac made from ticket sales must have been eroded by the cost of smashed crockery.

Barra is beautiful but tiny and would not be my recommendation for a prolonged stay. Benbecula is a flat as a pancake and pretty featureless. For a fixed base of a week or so Harris (beautiful beaches) and Lewis would likely be a good choice as it is the largest landmass.

I am apprehensive about using my slow R25/3 to get to Skye. How about the Welsh contingent hiring a van big enough to carry three bikes and riders to Mallaig or thereabouts and riding from there to the ferry, sharing the hire and fuel costs?

With the weather gods on your side it has the potential to be a fantastic trip and I am up for it  :bike:.

Best wishes to all
:respekt:
Norrie

Uff...thanks for your patience.

Despite the news from Bill (which came quite as a shock) it seems that most of the Skye/Wales gang is back together :juhuu:.

Thanks to Norrie for his input, it is simply invaluable to have somebody with such fresh memories and experience to share.

As for the date and itinerary....that is something we can discuss here...for the sake of my mother's nerves (and my dogs) I should avoid being away from home for more than a fortnight....I'd prefer travelling in June or July as I do have colleagues with schoolkids at home (and those are bound to the summer holidays in August, which in turn will be the time when I have to man the castle, so to speak).

Coming to the Amsterdam ferry port of IJmuiden will take me a whole day from I am living, and although we have seen proof that the distance from there to Portree and beyond can actually be covered in one day I'd rather take my time and plan for a two-day-trip across the highlands...allowing us to pick up Norrie on the way and pay a visit to a water hole in the highlands I have grown very fond of over the years.  So six or (if we stick to the "arrive at the ferry the day before departure" scheme) seven days are already covered, which leaves roughly one week for the Western Isles. If Karl is going to come with us we might have a chance to ease the burden a little bit as he can't come by bike anyway....meaning car meaning trunk... ;D

Having said that I'd like to have a good idea of the start and ending date be mid October if possible so I can arrange for my days off...

So...first thing...who else has restrictions re the travel dates, being it due to personal or job circumstances?

All the best, Ute

That seems fine from my side Ute as I am not tied by dates as long as I have plenty of notice.

There may be a few more who own einzylinder bikes who I will ask if they are interested, if that is ok. Perhaps Robert Freeman might be one. I did ask Ashley Boal but he is looking to sell his R25 and by an ST.

Hello Brian.

Thanks for the fast feedback...pity to hear about Ashley...so he is trading fun for speed?

@Norrie: As I mentioned...we also could pick you up...and I promise not to slow you down too much, your bike being in top condition now, isn't she?

Hello Ute
Traveling North from Edinburgh together would be good. I am finding that I much prefer slower more scenic roads to travel on my R25/3 than busy 'A' roads.
I am still running the engine in possibly having done 600miles since fitting the newly rebored barrel/piston. Sustained higher speeds results in an oil weep out the timing hole cover - likely from the rear crankshaft seal, but all my vehicles are rolling projects
Can I suggest that June would be the prefered month to visit the Western Isles as a lot of UK residents holiday during July and August. Also May/June can quite often be better weather wise that far North.
Best wishes
Norrie

Hello Norrie.

Thanks for that information....until we get any other input this does look like another long way round...starting straight from the shores of the Edersee lake did work out nicely this year, why not go for a repeat...
