Hi All

I wonder if the group would be so kind as to help out a friend of mine with a carburettor setting problem.

He has a very nice R27 and has recently fitted a brand new Type 53 carburettor to it, as supplied by Stemler but he is battling to get it starting correctly.

It is proving very difficult to start but once it starts it runs very nicely and once started it will then start easily but if is left for a day or so it prove difficult to start again. When it is proving difficult to start the plug will be dry.

When he bought the new carburettor it was bought specifically for use on an R27 but it came with no setting instructions so is anybody able to help with the basic settings e.g.

main jet?
needle jet?
idle jet?
jet needle?
clip position?
idle mix setting?

Also what is the correct starting procedure, throttle/no throttle, enrichment device fully open/part open?

Any help will be much appreciated.

The Bing book shows that Type 53 carbs were not used until the 1970s with the /5s.  But for an R50/5, which has two 250cc engines, maybe these settings would be worth considering as a starting point:

main jet - 135
needle jet - 2.68
idle jet - 35
jet needle - 234
clip position - 3 (measured from the blunt end, so 3 is pretty rich)
idle mix setting - 1 turn

Beemer

Hi guys,
this is Kurt (beemer) from West Germany. Have bought the same carb from Stemler for my R27 six months ago.
The carb has a choke which I just use during winter.
The setting is:
main jet 125
idle jet 35
needle clip setting - 2nd gap from top
idle mix setting - approx. 1 turn, but this needs fixing with a warm engine

Have a special start procedure:
no ignition - 2 or 3 openings of the gas handle
no ignition - 2 times kick-starter
ignition on - gas handle 1/4 open
ignition on - kick-starter with speed

The 2 to 3 openings of the gas handle work like a gas pump.

The 53 Bing carb works perfect with my R27 and with the beautiful MZB Power Dynamo
magnetic 12 volts dynamo and micro computer high voltage ignition.

If there are more question, pls. let me know and talk to the specialists at the forum.

Take care and keep on beeming.

Thanks Kurt

It is good to hear from someone who has personal experience of this set-up.

I will pass the knowledge onto my friend.
