VIN Number (Fahrgestellnummer)

Vehicle Identification Number

Correct, in the UK the 'age' of a vehicle is based upon the Date the Frame was made.so if you had a 1932 R3 frame and fitted a 2020 R18 engine, it would be a 1932 BMW.

If you had a 2020 R18 frame and fitted a 1932 R3 engine it would be  2020 BMW.

This is quite important as vehicle aged 40 year old are exempt for from all taxes The TUV and Road Tax, BMW built in up to 7th Jan 1980 would be Free of Charge, 8th Jan 1980, you have to wait another year.

I deal with these situations daily, about 90 -100 a year from really 1930 - 2014, next year will be my 7th year offering this service.

The demand is such that I now only cover up to 1979, and  a colleague deals with 1980 to date, under my guidance.

I have also had BMW's stamped with T.P. Nummer, Type Proof Number.

These are stamped by the German TUV Dept, meaning it is NOT a BMW, but a 'collection  of unrelated BMW parts assembled into a motorcycle'

As such, it 'cannot be dated'. and in GB cannot be registered to ride on Public roads

I quote from BMW Classic;
______________________________________________________
" This is so-called ,,Typprüfnummer" or "TP-Nummer". It is allocated by the TÜV when the bike has been built from parts or modified to a degree where it no longer conforms to the homologation document (ABE, Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis). It is also allocated when the original VIN is no longer known or regognizable but this is more common for older bikes. It is definitely not a BMW VIN and we have no way to find out what it originally was".

I hope this helps, and also prevents any of you buying, 'dud, mongrel, fake, bitza' as we say in England

T.P spells  DANGER. Do Not Touch
